Byron Bay is raising concerns about how its low-rise character will be protected as NSW government planning pathways increasingly allow major developments to bypass or vary local height limits. According to The Echo, the town faces potential height breaches of 16m to 21m as developments gain approval through state-level mechanisms that circumvent or override local controls.

The Echo also reports that Lynda Dean, described as a central figure in the Byron Shire community and broader Northern Rivers networks, has passed away. Dean was remembered for her life devoted to love and making the world a better place.
