Ballina: Machete Attack Charges, E-Bike Hit-and-Run, Speed Enforcement, Census Support

Ballina faces serious incidents including a machete attack and alleged hit-and-run, plus enforcement challenges in Lennox Head and low census participation in surrounding communities.

A man and woman have been charged following a machete attack on River Street in Ballina that left a 22-year-old man seriously injured, according to Ballina News Daily.

A 78-year-old man has also been charged after allegedly pursuing e-bike riders in his car and striking their bike, sending two boys aged 11 and 12 to hospital, Ballina News Daily reports.

In Lennox Head, drivers continue to exceed a 10km/h shared zone speed limit, and police say conventional radar speed detection cannot effectively enforce the unusually low restriction. Ballina News Daily notes that the low speeds are presenting challenges for standard enforcement methods.

Lower census participation in Evans Head, Broadwater, Woodburn and Wardell has prompted the Australian Bureau of Statistics to offer additional face-to-face assistance sessions following a shift to online census collection, the publication reports.
